Psalms (תְּהִילִּים)

1

I seek refuge in You, O LORD;
may I never be disappointed.

א׳

בְּךָ־יְהֹוָה חָסִיתִי אַל־אֵבוֹשָׁה לְעוֹלָם׃

2

As You are beneficent, save me and rescue me;
incline Your ear to me and deliver me.

ב׳

בְּצִדְקָתְךָ תַּצִּילֵנִי וּתְפַלְּטֵנִי הַטֵּה־אֵלַי אׇזְנְךָ וְהוֹשִׁיעֵנִי׃

3

Be a sheltering rock for me to which I may always repair;
decree my deliverance,
for You are my rock and my fortress.

Rashi’s Commentary

• in which to enter continually into that shelter, to save myself within it from the pursuer.
• You commanded to save me You saved me many times through Your messengers.

ג׳

הֱיֵה לִי  לְצוּר מָעוֹן לָבוֹא תָּמִיד צִוִּיתָ לְהוֹשִׁיעֵנִי כִּי־סַלְעִי וּמְצוּדָתִי אָתָּה׃

רש"י

• לבוא תמיד. באותו מעון, להנצל בתוכו מן הרודף:
• צוית להושיעני. פעמים רבות הושעתני על ידי שלוחיך:

My God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and the lawless.

Rashi’s Commentary

• and robs Heb. וחומץ, like וחומס. Similarly (Isa. 1:17): “strengthen the robbed (חמוץ)”; the robbed.

ד׳

אֱלֹהַי פַּלְּטֵנִי מִיַּד רָשָׁע מִכַּף מְעַוֵּל וְחוֹמֵץ׃

רש"י

• וחומץ. כמו חומס וכן (ישעיה א') אשרו חמוץ, נגזל:

For You are my hope,
O Lord GOD,
my trust from my youth.

ה׳

כִּי־אַתָּה תִקְוָתִי אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה מִבְטַחִי מִנְּעוּרָי׃

6

While yet unborn, I depended on You;
in the womb of my mother, You were my support;
I sing Your praises always.

Rashi’s Commentary

• You drew me You drew me and caused me to pass, as (Num. 11:31): “and drove up (ויגז) quails”; (below 90:10), “for it is cut off (גז) swiftly and we fly away.”

ו׳

עָלֶיךָ  נִסְמַכְתִּי מִבֶּטֶן מִמְּעֵי אִמִּי אַתָּה גוֹזִי בְּךָ תְהִלָּתִי תָמִיד׃

רש"י

• אתה גוזי. אתה מוציאי ומעבירי כמו (במדבר י״א:ל״א) ויגז שלוים, כי גז חיש ונעופה (לקמן צ'):

I have become an example for many,
since You are my mighty refuge.

Rashi’s Commentary

• I was as an example for the multitude Many saw my troubles and worried lest an example of my trouble befall them; lest I be an example for them: “just as happened to this one, so will happen to us.” As the matter is said (Ezek. 24:24): “and Ezekiel will be an example to you.”

ז׳

כְּמוֹפֵת הָיִיתִי לְרַבִּים וְאַתָּה מַחֲסִי־עֹז׃

רש"י

• כמופת הייתי לרבים. רבים ראו צרותי ודאגו פן יקראם דוגמת צרתי פן אהיה להם לאות כאשר הוקרה לזה כן יקרה לנו כענין שנאמר (יחזקאל כ"ד) והיה יחזקאל לכם למופת:

My mouth is full of praise to You,
glorifying You all day long.

ח׳

יִמָּלֵא פִי תְּהִלָּתֶךָ כׇּל־הַיּוֹם תִּפְאַרְתֶּךָ׃

9

Do not cast me off in old age;
when my strength fails, do not forsake me!

Rashi’s Commentary

• at the time of old age If I have aged with sins, meaning, I have sinned exceedingly.

ט׳

אַל־תַּשְׁלִיכֵנִי לְעֵת זִקְנָה כִּכְלוֹת כֹּחִי אַל־תַּעַזְבֵנִי׃

רש"י

• לעת זקנה. אם זקנתי בחטאים כלומר שחטאתי הרבה:

For my enemies talk against me;
those who wait for me are of one mind,

Rashi’s Commentary

• For my enemies said of me My enemies said of me, and took counsel together, saying, “God has forsaken him.” We shall not be punished because of him since he has already stumbled in sin.

י׳

כִּי־אָמְרוּ אוֹיְבַי לִי וְשֹׁמְרֵי נַפְשִׁי נוֹעֲצוּ יַחְדָּו׃

רש"י

• כי אמרו אויבי לי. אמרו אויבי עלי ונועצו יחדו לאמר אלהים עזבו אין אנו נענשין עליו שכבר נכשל בעבירה:

saying, “God has forsaken him;
chase him and catch him,
for no one will save him!”

י״א

לֵאמֹר אֱלֹהִים עֲזָבוֹ רִדְפוּ וְתִפְשׂוּהוּ כִּי־אֵין מַצִּיל׃

12

O God, be not far from me;
my God, hasten to my aid!

י״ב

אֱלֹהִים אַל־תִּרְחַק מִמֶּנִּי אֱלֹהַי לְעֶזְרָתִי (חישה) [חוּשָׁה]׃

13

Let my accusers perish in frustration;
let those who seek my ruin be clothed in reproach and disgrace!

י״ג

יֵבֹשׁוּ יִכְלוּ שֹׂטְנֵי נַפְשִׁי יַעֲטוּ חֶרְפָּה וּכְלִמָּה מְבַקְשֵׁי רָעָתִי׃

14

As for me, I will hope always,
and add to the many praises of You.

Rashi’s Commentary

• As for me, I shall constantly hope for Your salvation, and when You save me, I will add to Your praise.

י״ד

וַאֲנִי תָּמִיד אֲיַחֵל וְהוֹסַפְתִּי עַל־כׇּל־תְּהִלָּתֶךָ׃

רש"י

• ואני תמיד איחל. לישועתך וכשתושיעני אוסיף על תהלתך:

My mouth tells of Your beneficence,
of Your deliverance all day long,
though I know not how to tell it.

Rashi’s Commentary

• I do not know their number of the righteousness and the salvations that You have done for me.

ט״ו

פִּי  יְסַפֵּר צִדְקָתֶךָ כׇּל־הַיּוֹם תְּשׁוּעָתֶךָ כִּי לֹא יָדַעְתִּי סְפֹרוֹת׃

רש"י

• לא ידעתי ספורות. של צדקות והתשועות שעשית עמי:

I come with praise of Your mighty acts, O Lord GOD;
I celebrate Your beneficence, Yours alone.

Rashi’s Commentary

• I shall come to thank and praise for Your mighty deeds.

ט״ז

אָבוֹא בִּגְבֻרוֹת אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה אַזְכִּיר צִדְקָתְךָ לְבַדֶּךָ׃

רש"י

• אבוא. להודות ולהלל בגבורתך:

You have let me experience it, God, from my youth;
until now I have proclaimed Your wondrous deeds,

Rashi’s Commentary

• and until now Until this day, with what passed over me,
• and until old age and hoary hair when I reach sixty and seventydo not forsake me.

י״ז

אֱלֹהִים לִמַּדְתַּנִי מִנְּעוּרָי וְעַד־הֵנָּה אַגִּיד נִפְלְאוֹתֶיךָ׃

רש"י

• ועד הנה. עד היום במה שעבר עלי:
• ועד זקנה ושיבה. לכשאגיע לששים ושבעים אל תעזבני (סא"א):

and even in hoary old age do not forsake me, God,
until I proclaim Your strength to the next generation,
Your mighty acts, to all who are to come,

Rashi’s Commentary

• to everyone who comes Your might To everyone who approaches me, I will tell of Your might.

י״ח

וְגַם עַד־זִקְנָה  וְשֵׂיבָה אֱלֹהִים אַל־תַּעַזְבֵנִי עַד־אַגִּיד זְרוֹעֲךָ לְדוֹר לְכׇל־יָבוֹא גְּבוּרָתֶךָ׃

רש"י

• לכל יבוא גבורתך. לכל אשר יבוא אצלי אגיד גבורתיך:

Your beneficence, high as the heavens, O God,
You who have done great things;
O God, who is Your peer!

Rashi’s Commentary

• And Your charity, O God which is up to the heights. The two verses are connected by “I shall tell [of] Your strength to the generation.”

י״ט

וְצִדְקָתְךָ אֱלֹהִים עַד־מָרוֹם אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂיתָ גְדֹלוֹת אֱלֹהִים מִי כָמוֹךָ׃

רש"י

• וצדקתך אלהים. אשר היא עד מרום, שני המקראות מחוברים עם אגיד זרועך לדור:

You who have made me undergo many troubles and misfortunes
will revive me again,
and raise me up from the depths of the earth.

כ׳

אֲשֶׁר (הראיתנו) [הִרְאִיתַנִי ] צָרוֹת רַבּוֹת וְרָעוֹת תָּשׁוּב (תחינו) [תְּחַיֵּנִי] וּמִתְּהֹמוֹת הָאָרֶץ תָּשׁוּב תַּעֲלֵנִי׃

21

You will grant me much greatness,
You will turn and comfort me.

כ״א

תֶּרֶב  גְּדֻלָּתִי וְתִסֹּב תְּנַחֲמֵנִי׃

22

Then I will acclaim You to the music of the lyre
for Your faithfulness, O my God;
I will sing a hymn to You with a harp,
O Holy One of Israel.

כ״ב

גַּם־אֲנִי  אוֹדְךָ בִכְלִי־נֶבֶל אֲמִתְּךָ אֱלֹהָי אֲזַמְּרָה לְךָ בְכִנּוֹר קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

23

My lips shall be jubilant, as I sing a hymn to You,
my whole being, which You have redeemed.

Rashi’s Commentary

• My lips will sing praises with the music of the harp when I play to You on the harp.

כ״ג

תְּרַנֵּנָּה שְׂפָתַי כִּי אֲזַמְּרָה־לָּךְ וְנַפְשִׁי אֲשֶׁר פָּדִיתָ׃

רש"י

• תרננה שפתי. עם זמר קול הכנור כשאזמרה לך בכנור:

All day long my tongue shall recite Your beneficent acts,
how those who sought my ruin were frustrated and disgraced.

כ״ד

גַּם־לְשׁוֹנִי כׇּל־הַיּוֹם תֶּהְגֶּה צִדְקָתֶךָ כִּי־בֹשׁוּ כִי־חָפְרוּ מְבַקְשֵׁי רָעָתִי׃ {פ}
